***I rewatched this film on 16/02/19. With the exception of hearing a Queen song every 20 minutes to give you a tingle of nostalgia, this film is one tacky mess. The script is awful, certain scenes had us laughing out loud, as they were so cheesy. Finally, I believe it's the very obvious heteronormative take on an icon's life that was the last straw. I would choose to listen to the Queen's Greatest Hits as an alternative to watching this film***

The below is my original review

To a lot of people, this would be a highly anticipated biopic. People of my generation and the previous grew up with Queen as a rock band or got into them as they had older siblings who loved them. So, how does making a film about one of the greatest rock bands in history hold up to the hype? Well, the answer is not straightforward. The movie was good - not great but Rami Malek as Freddie was a movie phenomenon. Hardcore fans of Queen may call bullshit on the storyline - however, no biopic is 100% accurate. Maybe this is more 20% accurate, but it is still thoroughly enjoyable. A review of the film said it feels like a Wikipedia entry turned into a movie - I think even that might be a stretch. In simple -there is NO WAY a lot of what was said in the film actually took place. But I am happy to accept that it is dramatisation (extreme dramatisation) of true events. If you are a fan of Queen, the music sequences will certainly give you goosebumps. A lot of the concert scenes are filmed remarkably and as mentioned earlier - the camera loves Rami Malek and his charisma as Freddie Mercury is worth the entry price of this film. The weak point in this film that makes this movie good and not great is the quality of the script. While it is obvious that none of what was said in the film actually happened, they could have done a few extra edits to make it a higher quality. Finally - the Live Aid concert at the pinnacle of the film would make you say 'Wow!' Kudos to the director who pretty much nailed that bit. So should you watch it? I would say yes. It is a good movie and there is no doubt you will enjoy it.  You may be even want to crank up Queen's Greatest Hits after you see this. (However - if you want good music and a better movie, watch A Star is Born - it's a higher quality film and it has Lady Gaga!).
